Emĕsa

or Emissa (Ἔμισσα). A city of Syria on the east bank of the Orontes, the native city of Iulia Domna, Elagabalus (q.v.), and of Alexander Severus. It was the scene of the decisive battle between Aurelian and Zenobia (A.D. 273).
